Iris

Iris R.

Iris is an exuberant assistant manager at a Copán Ruinas hotel who remembers Mayatan as being one of the best parts of her childhood. She is thankful for the people who made it possible for her to study here on scholarship, receiving what she calls “the best education!”

Iris has a long list of favorite teachers that includes Miss Marisol, Miss Cathy, Mr. David, Mr. Bill Girard, Miss Belva, Mr. Frank, Miss Norma, and Miss Helda Manchame. When she left to attend colegio in Santa Rosa, she felt very prepared, and she says that Mayatan “opened lots of doors for me. Thanks to the English I learned in Mayatan I have a lot of job opportunities.”

English is a big part of Iris’s current job, which has her interacting with tourists, and this ambitious young Honduran thinks English skills will also help her with her future plans. Although she left university early to help her family during the political and economic crisis, Iris plans to return and study industrial engineering, a career that will allow her to work with friends and continue to help her family.

Iris’s ideal is to live and work in Copán, though she would also like to do some traveling before settling down. For now, Iris thanks Mayatan School for the “dedication and patience of the excellent teachers.” We’re happy to have Iris working in our community now, and when she leaves to study again, we’ll look forward to her return.
