The annual gymnastics competition raises school spirits, the level of competition, and the volume all around campus. This was Mayatan's first year of gymnastics with its own PA system, and the high school students behind the controls really pumped up the volume on the Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas, and Latin Pop that formed the background for younger students' coordinated dance and athletics routines.
The competing students were in grade 1-9, and a group of judges split the competition into three categories: primary grades 1-3, primary grades 4-6, and secondary grades 7-9. There was a lot of interesting variation in music and movement this year, and this administrator was really impressed with the way that regular old teachers and students put together such professional routines.
Even students as young as first grade were doing cartwheels and somersaults, and many groups had human pyramids, towers, and three dimensional formations that tested the muscles and coordination of the students. There were synchronized pushups, kids on shoulders, splits, flips, and various incarnations of our M-B-S initials.
The judges decided that 1st grade, 4th grade, and 9th grade were the winners, though the emphasized the great showing by all of the grades (and we're not just saying that).
You had to be there to capture the feeling, but if you weren't, these photos offer a nice taste.
