Welcoming the New School Year
The school year is now upon us! This past Monday, just as the early morning sun crept over hillside surrounding Copan Ruinas, Mayatan students, teachers, and administrators gathered on our basketball court to officially kick off the 2012-13 academic year.
And what a big crowd turned out: with 325 students from Nursery to 12th grade, and a staff of 38 teachers, this year will be Mayatan’s biggest yet! It also marks our largest class of scholarship students to date. Over 120 students receive financial aid directly from the Mayatan Foundation, and dozens more are supported by local businesses in Copan, or receive tuition discounts offered by the Mayatan School.
After the assembly, students quickly fell back into their school-day routine: heading to class to meet their new teachers, picking up textbooks from the library, grabbing lunch in the cafeteria, and even getting a work =out during their first P.E. course of the year. A big thank you to the Mayatan administrators who have worked all month to ensure that the first day went off without a hitch – because of their hard work, we’re off to a great start!
