Mayatan Jaguar Soccer Update
The 2014-15 Mayatan Jaguar soccer season recently came to a close. This season, one that started all the way back in December, was one to remember. On a weekly basis, our four teams (junior varsity and varsity boys and girls) competed in the 2nd annual Torneo La Amistad, a local tournament that saw our Jaguars up against other local secondary and high schools. Each week our teams fought hard and played with Mayatan Pride. At the end of the tournament, Mayatan had some new hardware to show off—varsity boys brought home third place in their division, varsity girls came away with second place, and jv boys won first place in their division. Senior Skarlett Guerra was presented a medal for most goals scored throughout the tournament in her category, and 9th grader Daniel Lieva received the medal for fewest goals allowed by a goalkeeper in his category.
At the national level, our teams played with the same effort and Mayatan Pride with which they had played all year. Our jv boys and girls, as well as our varsity boys, showed their Mayatan will and character in their respective national qualifying games, and our varsity girls silenced many critics and showed the rest of the ABSH that Mayatan has arrived on the soccer scene with their performance at the National Tournament.
This year, 47% of secondary students participated in soccer, 61% of secondary students have been part of our athletic program in some capacity thus far, and 96% of those students ended their seasons as academically eligible athletes. Our teams compiled an overall record of 11-12-2, but this soccer season was about much more than the numbers. Our soccer season was full of special moments that made us all so very proud to be a part of this program. From our varsity boys’ commitment and leadership, to our jv boys’ grit, to our varsity girls’ will to compete, to our jv girls’ effort, this soccer season was one of growth. It was one of hard work. It was one of loving and caring for one another. And it was another step in the right direction in our ever-growing athletic program.
We want to thank all who helped make this soccer season so special—all the players, coaches, administrators, teachers, parents, and everyone else who played a part this year. We would especially like to thank our seniors. Thanks to their commitment, hard work, and leadership, they left an excellent example for our athletes of the future to follow.
Congratulations to the 2014-15 Mayatan Jaguar Soccer Teams!
