Higher Education

In recent years, Mayatan graduates have gone on to university programs in Honduras, throughout Central America, and in North America and Europe. In fact, we were surprised to discover that 81.8% of all Mayatan graduates and over 65% of scholarship students have gone on to university.

In addition, several former students have won competitive scholarships to attend universities in the United States and intensive international baccalaureate programs in Canada. Mayatan is actively seeking ways to offer new, affordable opportunities for our students to continue their educations abroad.

Mauricio

Mauricio won a scholarship to an international baccalaureate in Canada.

Doris

Doris won a scholarship to attend a university in the U.S. beginning in 2011.

In 2011, Mayatan formed a new relationship with Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois, United States.

Mr. John Weber, Director of Secondary Programs and an Illinois native, discovered Rock Valley when he was looking for ways to enable Mayatan graduates to study affordably in the United States. Rock Valley College will give in-district discounted tuition to foreign students enrolled in its 2-year associates degree program. These students would have to find a local family to host them during their stay.

The discount offered by Rock Valley College is significant, amounting to over $12,000 in savings, and it would enable some Mayatan students to study in the United States for costs around $3,000 a year. The program would be an especially good choice to prepare Mayatan graduates for 4-year bachelors degree programs in the United States, helping them to adjust to higher education abroad while earning college credits.

Mayatan students have yet to enroll in Rock Valley, but with the new high school program graduating its first class in 2012, we expect to send some students there in the coming years.

If you live in or near the Rockford, Illinois area or have connections there and would like to help find home stays for Mayatan students, please contact Mr. Weber at john@mayatanfoundation.org.
