Mayatan Foundation and Bilingual School Established 1991

Visit

Mayatan Bilingual School welcomes visitors of all stripes. Our students love practicing their English skills with native speakers from out of town! We frequently host neighbors from Honduras and Central America, tourists and tour groups, university groups, and religious organizations.

We are happy to offer free tours to small groups.

If you call or email ahead, we may be able to arrange a student-led tour or at least give you and your group one-on-one time to talk with one of our mature students in English. Mayatan kids know practically everything about the area, local life, and Honduras, and you'll learn and share a lot with them.

On your tour you will also learn about the history of the school and education in Honduras. You will hear stories about our volunteers, founders, students, and permanent staff-members, and you will get to see them in action if you come during a school day (M-F, 7am-3pm, Aug-June).

You will stop in on classrooms of all levels as you tour the campus, check out our library and computer classroom, and you'll even have the chance to eat a cheap but tasty snack or a meal at our caseta if your timing is right.

If you cannot come to campus during school hours, please call David W. Harrington, fundraising director, on his cellphone at +(504) 9534-0328 to arrange an alternate time to tour the school.

Getting to Campus

If you are already in town, you can ask a moto-taxi to take you from the center of Copán to our campus for about L20 ($1.00) a person. We are about 3.5km uphill from the Parque Central on the road that leads to the Macaw Mountain Bird Park. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even walk.

The best times to visit are between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., though the school day runs 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. When you arrive, please check in at the Administration building, which is closest to the road.
