Learn Abroad at Mayatan (High School and Youth Volunteers)

High school students (ages 14+) and recent graduates can have the adventure of a lifetime and make a difference in the world by spending a few weeks at Mayatan Bilingual School. We offer an authentic experience volunteering in classrooms, studying Spanish, and learning local culture by living with a host family. It is sure to be the learning experience of a lifetime, and prior Spanish language skills are not required. Learn more.

Short-Term Volunteers

If you will be visiting Copán Ruinas and would like to see our campus and volunteer for a day or a few days, we just might have a spot for you!

Depending on present availability and needs, you may be able to present something educational to the students. Lead a lesson on a topic you know well, teach a valuable skill, or discuss educational or job options our students might consider. We're open to new ideas that enrich our students' education.

Specialist Volunteers

Mayatan volunteers on Independence Day

A number of people have come down to Honduras to spend a week, a month, or even longer assisting Mayatan.

For example, Viki Defferding, of George Fox University, took a sabbatical here and helped develop our Spanish-language curriculum.

Other visitors have assisted us by re-cataloging and re-shelving library books and designing and building playground equipment.

Speaking Spanish is not necessary, though coming to Honduras would provide you with a wonderful opportunity to practice. If you would be interested in long-term volunteer projects, please send an e-mail to: director@mayatanfoundation.org.

Administrative Volunteers

From time to time, Mayatan Bilingual School has openings for long-term, non-teaching administrative volunteers. For example, this website was created by a long-term volunteer. If you have particular skills that you'd like to share with Mayatan, from technology to construction to fundraising and beyond, please contact us and let us know how you might be able to help.
