In addition to the work of providing scholarships for deserving students, Mayatan Foundation is also embarking efforts to improve our facilities and the services we are able to offer students. A few of our current and upcoming projects are listed below. If you have skills, advice or experience you think can help us please get in touch. Don’t forget to check back here from time to time to see how our projects are progressing.
‘Colegio’ is the Spanish word for what would be referred to in the United States as a high school. Currently, Mayatan Bilingual School has classes for students in grades PreKinder through grade 9. It is our dream for the school to continue to grade 12 so students would be able to complete their education in English without having to leave Copán Ruinas.
Our little library has grown book by book, donated and mailed by international supporters. Because Mayatan located in a relatively rural part of the country where literacy levels are quite low it can be difficult for us to purchase books locally. We can use new or good–condition used books suitable for any level. There is a list of books we are looking for available on our Amazon.com Wishlist.
In efforts to expand the services to our students, Mayatan Foundation is in the process of designing a state-of-the-art Media Center that will include a computer lab with Internet access and access to educational videos and software. We know that in order for our students to be competitive in the emerging global market it will be important for them to have computer skills and know how to retrieve information. This project is in its early phases, but we are already seeking donations to help us to cover the costs of the construction and purchasing equipment. If you would be interested in contributing towards this project, please visit the ‘Ways to Give’ page and make sure you indicate that your contribution is for this project.
Our music program is in its infancy – right now there are simply not enough instruments to go around. We would love to enhance the young lives of our students by helping them to appreciate music and all of the benefits that come from learning to play an instrument. The opportunity for them to bring music to the community through small performances is also a benefit for our students' self-esteem and the community outreach of Mayatan. There is much talent waiting to be harvested and a vibrant musical heritage to be continued. To learn more about what we are doing please visit the ‘Music at Mayatan’ page.
If you can donate a used instrument or help by purchasing something from our ‘wishlist’ you would be making a huge difference to our students.
We are in the process of adding a science laboratory for our students to begin conducting experiments and learning firsthand about scientific principles. We will be researching and preparing a grant proposal to attract funding for this essential facility, and in the meantime invite interested contributors to view our ‘wishlist’ of equipment to help us improve what we can offer students right now.
We are always on the look out for sets of 25 or more new or good-condition used textbooks – in any subject. If you would be able to assist with this project please contact the Director of Development at director@mayatanfoundation.org.
